FIGHTING FOR AFFORDABLE, QUALITY, UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE

Affordable, quality health care is essential to every one, and nearly every day North Bay residents tell me they are worried about the future of our system.  Unfortunately, the system is broken, leaving 45 million Americans without coverage.  Affordable health care is a right, not a privilege.

That’s why I have joined Representative John Conyers (D-MI) in cosponsoring H.R. 676, the United States National Health Insurance Act, legislation which calls for a single payer national health insurance system.  This bill would control skyrocketing health costs and restore choice of physician and the doctor-patient relationship.  In addition, I have supported efforts to expand healthcare access to the most vulnerable among us – particularly children.  In addition, I supported the CHIP legislation, which was recently signed into law by President Obama and will provide coverage for 11 million children, including over 1.5 million in California.

Also, I have strongly supported a range of legislation to confront the crisis of rising prescription drug costs, such as allowing drugs to be imported from oversees.  Seniors, many of whom live on fixed incomes, are particularly vulnerable to rising prescription drug prices.  That’s why I opposed, and support efforts to rewrite, President Bush’s Part D prescription plan.  Instead of providing seniors with access to affordable prescriptions, by removing the government’s ability to negotiate prices for drugs in bulk, the program became a windfall for drug companies.

In addition, I am actively working to address a variety of local healthcare concerns, such as Marin County’s high rate of breast cancer, and Medicare reimbursement rates for rural physicians in Sonoma County.

Marin County’s breast cancer rates are alarming high.  That’s why I am working with the local community and federal government to determine the best approach and means of intervention to investigate Marin’s high breast cancer rates.  In addition, I have worked with Senator Boxer to secure millions of dollars in federal funding to bolster local research efforts.  I have also introduced the Annie Fox Act, named in honor of a young woman from our community who died of cancer at only 35, to study breast cancer in younger victims.

It’s also important that local doctors receive their full reimbursement under Medicare.  That’s why I have cosponsored legislation to prevent any cuts in the reimbursement rate for physicians, and to ensure that rural doctors are not discriminated against when it comes to reimbursement rates, and receive the amount that reflects the costs of the services they provide.  This is especially important to residents of Sonoma County, who are seeing doctors leave the area because they can’t afford to stay in business.

Lastly, to promote healthy childbirth, it’s essential that we ensure that all women have access to a full range of reproductive choices, including contraception, comprehensive sexuality education, and abortion.  That’s why I have supported legislation to ensure that comprehensive sexual education is taught in our schools, and have backed measures to provide prenatal care to low-income pregnant women.
